Working with high-voltage cable test equipment requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Here are the critical safety measures every team must follow.

Before Testing Begins

  • Verify the cable is de-energized and isolated from all power sources
  • Test for absence of voltage using a calibrated voltage detector
  • Apply working grounds on both ends of the cable section
  • Establish an exclusion zone with appropriate barriers and signage
  • Brief all team members on the test plan and emergency procedures

During Testing

  • Use the permission key system - all systems require a physical key to activate high voltage
  • Maintain communication between test operator and fault location team via radio
  • Monitor ground loop protection indicators continuously
  • Never bypass safety interlocks or automatic discharge systems
  • Wear appropriate PPE: arc-rated clothing, insulating gloves, safety glasses, hard hat

After Testing

  • Press emergency stop to discharge stored energy
  • Verify zero energy state before disconnecting test leads
  • Remove grounds in reverse order
  • Document all test results and any anomalies observed
