Essential Safety Protocols for Cable Testing
Working with high-voltage cable test equipment requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Here are the critical safety measures every team must follow.
Before Testing Begins
- Verify the cable is de-energized and isolated from all power sources
- Test for absence of voltage using a calibrated voltage detector
- Apply working grounds on both ends of the cable section
- Establish an exclusion zone with appropriate barriers and signage
- Brief all team members on the test plan and emergency procedures
During Testing
- Use the permission key system - all systems require a physical key to activate high voltage
- Maintain communication between test operator and fault location team via radio
- Monitor ground loop protection indicators continuously
- Never bypass safety interlocks or automatic discharge systems
- Wear appropriate PPE: arc-rated clothing, insulating gloves, safety glasses, hard hat
After Testing
- Press emergency stop to discharge stored energy
- Verify zero energy state before disconnecting test leads
- Remove grounds in reverse order
- Document all test results and any anomalies observed
